The Gayatri mantra has been traditionally recited or chanted 108 times on three specific occasions each day: at sunrise, midday, and sunset. It can also be repeated in larger quantities, such as 1,008 or 10,008 times. This practice of reciting the Gayatri mantra three times a day serves as an affirmation of the trinity of life: birth, growth, and death. Many practitioners utilize a japa mala, or prayer beads, with 108 beads while chanting.
The significance of the number 108 has been well-established in Hinduism, Buddhism, and various yoga and spiritual practices over centuries. Numerous interpretations have been presented to explain its relevance:
- The ancient Indian mathematicians may have identified 108 as the product of a significant mathematical operation (e.g., 11 x 22 x 33 = 108), believed to carry special numerological weight.
- There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet, each representing both masculine and feminine energy (Shiva and Shakti). The product of 54 doubled is 108.
- Within the Sri Yantra, there are multiple marmas (intersections) where three lines converge; there are 54 such intersections each embodying both masculine and feminine qualities, thus leading to the calculation of 54 x 2 = 108.
- The product of 9 and 12 yields 108, and both numbers hold spiritual significance across various ancient traditions.
- The chakras — our energy centers — correlate with intersections of energy lines, totalling 108 lines converging into the heart chakra. One of these lines, Sushumna, extends to the crown chakra and is said to be the route to self-realization.
- In Vedic astrology, there are 12 constellations accompanied by 9 arc segments known as namshas or chandrakalas; again, this amounts to 9 x 12 = 108. Here, Chandra represents moon, while kalas refer to divisions within a whole.
- The components of the number 108 can be symbolically interpreted: 1 signifies God or higher Truth; 0 symbolizes emptiness or completeness in one's spiritual journey; and 8 represents infinity or eternity.
- It is noted that Atman, or the human soul, navigates through a journey of 108 stages.
- The Indian classical dance form Bharatanatyam encompasses 108 distinct styles.
- The Muktikopanishad enumerates that there are precisely 108 Upanishads.
